How to say NO: Tips for saying NO nicely
Have you ever been in a situation where someone asks you to do something you don’t want to but you say yes anyway?
Your mother in law want to come and stay for a month, you’ve been invited to an event you really don’t want to go to, a friend wants to borrow your favourite dress…..
It can be so hard to say no!
We don’t want to offend or hurts someone’s feelings.
But when we do this we end up frustrated and resentful.
It’s OK to say NO
Sometimes it’s essential for your sanity.
I used to struggle with this a lot when I was younger. But I have learned that sometimes not saying no creates more stress for me.
My time is precious and it’s up to me to choose how I spend it
So here are my:
7 tips for saying NO on those occasions when you need to:
- Remember that you have the right to refuse a request. Saying no is not being rude.
- If you are not sure of your answer say you’ll get back to them. This gives you time to both decide whether you want to say yes or no and also to think about the words you might use.
- If you want to say yes to something you are not comfortable with just because you feel sorry for someone you are ignoring your own needs.
- You don’t have to justify, make excuses or explain why you are saying no. You are not obligated to always say Yes!
- If its difficult to decide on a yes or a no, ask yourself, “How will I feel about myself if I say yes to this request?”
- Practice. Say it out loud. Get comfortable with the word. “No, I’m not available.” “No, I prefer not to.” “No, that’s not my thing.” “Thank you, but no.”
- You don’t need to apologise for saying No. You haven’t done anything wrong.
